MSJC Announces 8th Annual Undocumented Student Action Week: Empowering Dreams and Building Belonging

10/8/2024

Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) proudly announces the commencement of its 8th annual Undocumented Student Action Week, beginning Monday, October 14, 2024. This week-long event aims to foster awareness and support for policies that enhance the success of undocumented students, featuring an engaging lineup of workshops, webinars, films, and discussions.

As part of a collaborative initiative led by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, and the Foundation for California Community Colleges, MSJC is committed to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. The college actively works to eliminate barriers to higher education for undocumented students, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported on their educational journeys toward financial stability.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program recipients alone are projected to contribute over $460 billion to the U.S. economy this decade, highlighting the vital role these students play in our society, as reported by the Center for American Progress.

The week will kick off with an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Juan Carlos Reyna on Monday, October 14, at the San Jacinto Campus, followed by another session on Wednesday, October 16, at the Menifee Valley Campus.

"We are thrilled to have Dr. Juan Carlos Reyna, a powerful voice for resilience and education, lead two transformative workshops during this week," said Rebecca Teague, Vice President of Student Services. "His story resonates with so many of our students and illustrates how they can find strength in their intersecting identities and embrace belonging on their own terms."

Lisa Campbell, Associate Dean of Student Services, added, “Navigating multiple identities can be challenging, but Dr. Reyna's journey reminds us that belonging isn’t defined by borders—it’s defined by self-discovery. This week, we honor the strength of our Dreamers, who continue to rise above obstacles and redefine what’s possible in their lives and communities.”

Dr. Reyna's workshops, titled "De Aquí y De Allá," will create a safe space for participants to reflect on their multifaceted identities. Drawing from his own experiences of growing up undocumented and navigating the complexities of belonging, Dr. Reyna will encourage students to embrace their identities and find strength in their personal journeys.
