Daily Actions, Not Activities: Explicit Steps to Belonging

Understanding the need to belong is understanding that we are hardwired to connect. From infancy, we respond to touch, endearing looks, and familiar sounds. Science shows that connection is vital for development. Schools, however, have become places where we treat community and belonging as an afterthought, and it shows. Our world is riddled with disconnection, and we have an opportunity and responsibility to create an emotionally and physically safe space to connect and then learn. Belonging is not a slogan, a banner, an assembly, or a commemorative week. Belonging is a work in progress, explicit actions to honor the contributions of every member. Showing up does not make them a member; being seen, being missed, being honored is where we must all begin. In her talk, Dr. Jennifer Martin dicusses how everyone who sets foot on campus can be connected if we take the steps to make it our culture.
