Packaging Guidelines

Student Budgets

It is the philosophy of the Financial Aid Office at Mt. San Jacinto College that the students and their parent(s) (if dependent) bear the primary responsibility of supporting their educational cost.  Thus, a student who is living with relatives will be treated as an “away from home” student, will be given an “away from home” budget, and students who failed to indicate their housing choice on the FAFSA application or choose “on campus” will automatically default to an “at home budget”.  Student who indicated a housing status of “at home”, and then move away must provide a rental agreement, lease, or utility bill to change their status to the higher “away from home” student budget.

A 9-month budget will be assigned to all students.

Expected Family Contribution

The expected family contribution used in awarding financial aid at Mt. San Jacinto College will be calculated by the central processor.

Awarding Title IV Aid

Title IV regulations require the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is awarded to the students with exceptional need, as determined by the lowest family contribution.  A ranking of first-priority applicants will be completed to identify the students who will receive these awards, ordered by the date FAFSA was submitted and file completed at MSJC.

California College Promise Grant (CCPG)

To qualify for the California College Promise Grant (CCPG), a student must be a resident of California or an eligible nonresident under AB540.  If Enrollment Services determines that the student must pay out of state tuition, that student is not eligible for the California College Promise Grant (CCPG).  There are three methods to determine eligibility:

Method A)   The student is eligible if they receive TANF, SSI/SSP, GR/GA or is a dependent of a disabled or deceased (service-connected) veteran.

Method B)   The student is eligible if the student’s or parent(s) of a dependent student’s income and household size meet the criteria levels.

A student that pays their own enrollment fees and are later determined to be eligible for the California College Promise Grant will need to request reimbursement for the fees that were paid.

Federal Pell Grant

Pell Grants will be awarded based on financial need according to your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) and Cost of Attendance (COA).  The maximum award a student is eligible to receive for the academic year will be posted to the students’ account. The maximum Pell grant award is $6,495 for the 2021-2022 academic year. The actual amount a student receives will be prorated based on actual units of enrollment for the term and will be adjusted for changes in enrollment per the disbursement schedule.

Students eligible for Summer Pell are those who either have remaining eligibility from 100% of their scheduled Pell Grant award or those who are meeting the enrollment criteria to qualify for up to 150% of their scheduled Pell Grant award in the Summer 2021 term.

At MSJC, Summer Pell is initially treated as a trailer from the 2020-2021 school year for students who either have remaining eligibility from the 100% of their scheduled Pell Grant award or those who are meeting enrollment criteria to qualify for up to 150% of their scheduled Pell Grant award in the Summer 2021 term. If a student no longer has remaining eligibility from the 2020-2021 school year, Pell eligibility will be determined as header for the 2021-2022.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

To receive FSEOG, a student must meet the “exceptional need” criteria. The FSEOG award amount is up to a maximum of $700 per academic year.  Students must be enrolled in at least 6 units to receive the award.  Award amounts are subject to change based on the availability of funds.

FSEOG will be automatically packaged and posted to the student’s account for all who meet the eligibility criteria as noted above.

Federal Work Study Program (FWS)

The FWS award amount is up to a maximum of $6,500 per academic year. To be considered for FWS, the student must meet the following:

  1. Have completed his/her FAFSA by the March 2nd priority deadline
  2. Indicated interested in FWS on their FAFSA
  3. Have Pell eligibility
  4. Be enrolled in at least 6 units
  5. Meet SAP standards

If the need of the first priority applicants cannot be met within the limits of the FWS fund available, awarding will be based on a first come first serve.  Also, FWS priority may be given to certain categories of students.  Students who received FWS in the previous award year will receive it again in the current year, as long as they remain eligible and meet the first priority deadline.

Acceptance of an FWS award does not guarantee placement in an actual position.  Placement for FWS is limited and cannot be guaranteed; Students are encouraged to search and get placement in a FWS job as early as possible in the academic year.

Cal Grant

Cal Grant will be awarded as notification is received from the California Student Aid Commission of the awards.   The maximum Cal Grant award amounts are determined by the Student Aid Commission:

  • Cal Grant B                $1,656 ($828 Fall semester, $828 Spring semester)
  • Cal Grant C                $1,094 ($547 Fall semester, $547 Spring semester)
  • Cal Grant A SWD       $6,000 ($3,000 Fall semester, $3,000 Spring semester)
  • Cal Grant B SWD       $6,008 ($3,004 Fall semester, $3,004 Spring semester)
  • Cal Grant C SWD       $4,000 ($2,000 Fall semester, $2,000 Spring semester)

At the time funds are ordered, a student’s units will be verified and the student will be paid according to the number of units they are enrolled in.  No students will be paid for enrollment below 6 units.  For those students who are paid as halftime or three-quarter time, then subsequently add units, we will verify and confirm if a differential check needs to be issued.

Cal Grant SWD awards are for students with dependent children.  Students must certify eligibility on their WebGrants for Students account.

Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG)

Student Success Completion Grants will be awarded based on financial need according to your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) and Cost of Attendance (COA). To receive the SSCG, a student must have received a Cal Grant B or Cal Grant C payment and enrolled in at least full time. The maximum SSCG is up to $4,000 per academic year.  All awards are subject to change based on the availability of funds.

Chafee Grant

The Chafee Grant assists current and former foster youth up to their 26th birthday to help pay for educational expenses. The Chafee Grant award is up to $5,000 per academic year and students must be enrolled at least half-time.

Disbursement Schedule and Method

Aid will be disbursed according to the disbursement schedule. If the first disbursement date is missed, then the first disbursement will be within four weeks of receiving your Award Notification.

Enrollment in late start classes will not be counted until the second and/or third major grant disbursements.

In order to provide more flexible options for receiving financial aid disbursements, Mt. San Jacinto College has partnered with BankMobile Disbursements to deliver financial aid funds to students.  For more information, visit BankMobile.

Early Release of Funds

If a student has a documented financial emergency, the Financial Aid Director or designee may at their discretion authorize an early release of financial aid funds.

Over-Awards

If a student has been over-awarded and has federal aid other than Federal Pell Grant, the other federal aid will be reduced until the over award is eliminated (starting with self-help aid first).

Award Changes

A student will be sent a revised Financial Aid Award Notification email when other awards are added or modified because a student is eligible for additional awards and/or to correct an over-award.   All awards are available for the student to view on Self-Service under the Financial Aid checklist.
