The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD) and Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) are
proud to announce the culmination of the third installation of “Water Wonders,” an art competition that celebrates the artistic talents of MSJC students and provides EVMWD with a permanent collection of artwork for display at various locations around its district office. “Water Wonders” is an ongoing, mutually beneficial collaboration that not only allows for widespread community engagement, but also promotes local art and supports student academic, artistic, and professional development.
“Water Wonders” has proved instrumental in providing MSJC students with challenging opportunites to create art outside of the classroom and to critically examine ideas that are a significant part of today’s contemporary experience. In the painting portion of the competition, students were provided with canvases of varying sizes and asked to interepret the idea of water through painting. This relevant, yet open-ended, theme allowed for students to investigate the relationship that poeple have with water in both tangible and abstract terms, which yielded thought-provoking results. Under the instruction of MSJC instructor Keith Hanz, the contest’s photography participants documented the water district’s Regional Waste Water Treatment Facility and shop areas. The photographs they took lend a new and suprisingly beautiful view of the district’s industrial landscape and fabrication areas.
The third “Water Wonders” was made possible through the generous support of the following sponsors: Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, Inc.; Mladen Buntich Construction Company; Packard Government Affairs; Best Best & Krieger, LLP; Social Pacific Construction; Schuler Engineering Corportation; O’Reilly Public Relations Inc.; Pacific Hydrotech Corporation; Keith Hanz; Aaron Brothers Art and Framing; and Metalography.
Both the paintings and photographs will be on display for the public at a free reception held at EVMWD on Wednesday, May 4 from 7 to 9pm, with an awards ceremony at 7:30pm. EVMWD is located at 31315 Chaney Street in Lake Elsinore. For more information please call 951-487-3585 or 951-894-8702.
