American Genius by Paul Hendry
Mt. San Jacinto College professor Paul Hendry has written and directed a new comedy film, American Genius, screening at the Riverside International Film Festival Saturday, April 16, from 6:15-7:30 p.m. There will be Q&A session with the director and cast afterward.
American Genius tells the story of a rag-tag crew of documentary filmmakers who hunt down the last of the MIDI composers, Karl Karkens, a man clinging desperately to an outdated audio format. After much prodding, the irascible and mendacious Karkens gives the crew more than it bargained for. Is he one of our greatest living artists or a megalomaniacal charlatan?
Working with family, friends, and an unruly band of San Jacinto English teachers, Hendry and Hasse enjoy the freedom of zero-budget, run-and-gun filmmaking. Shot entirely on location in Riverside, American Genius was made for under $200 and shot on weekends.
The Riverside International Film Festival kicks off with the Opening Night Gala Reception April 8 and runs through April 17 with screenings at the UltraStar Cinemas at 1201 University Avenue and at the new Culver Center for the Arts downtown.
