1. What is the Writing Center?
The Writing Center, located in room 136 of the Learning Resource Center on the Menifee Valley Campus and in the Learning Resource Center in the Library on the San Jacinto Campus, provides assistance for students who need help with classroom writing assignments. Students, depending upon their needs, may receive help with prewriting strategies, organizational strategies, and/or content development.
2. Who Should Visit the Writing Center?
All students. Students from all diciplines should visit the Writing Center. Throughout your college career, you will be assigned a variety of writing tasks. With any writing assignment, the Writing Center can help you address the assignment thoroughly, to write clearly and concisely, and to complete your assignment confidently.
3. What will the Writing Center help me with?
The Writing Center staff will help you generate ideas when you don't know where to start, help you focus your topic when you take on a subject too large, help you add supporting examples and details relevant to your paper's purpose, help you organize your ideas into a smoothly flowing essay, help you revise your essays for consistency and tone, help you recognize consistent grammatical errors, and help you correctly format documentation. In our computer lab, you can work on your paper or review grammar rules with a tutor available to assist you and answer questions.
4. What won't the Writing Center do?
The Writing Center staff will not write your essay for you, completely edit your work, guess at a possible grade for your essay, and discuss an existing grade.
5. Do I need an appointment?
All tutoring is on a drop-in basis.
6. How much does this cost?
All services are free; however, students must present MSJC ID cards to access services.
7. What should I bring with me to the Writing Center?
For individual tutoring, please bring a copy of the instructor's assignment or assignment sheet and a copy of your essay in progress.
To work in the computer lab, please bring a flash drive and any materials you need to complete the assignment.
8. Are children allowed in the Writing Center?
No. Unattended children distract others in the Writing Center, so we ask that you do not bring your children with you when you visit.
9. Can the staff somehow still read my paper even if I'm not able to get there?
Through your Blackboard shell to your course is a link to SMARTHINKING. This contracted service will provide online feedback for your writing. Please make sure to have your paper ready for submission BEFORE you click on the link.
If you have other questions, please contact the staff in the Writing Center or the coordinator.
